Integrative psychiatry

Your mind doesn't live in isolation. Neither does our care.

Integrative psychiatry means we're not only looking at your symptoms or deciding which medication to prescribe. We look at the whole picture: mental health, physical health, hormones, sleep, nutrition, stress, lifestyle and life experiences, so your plan treats the cause and not just the surface.

What integrative care includes

Five things we look at that a quick visit skips.

Labs and medical rule-outs

Thyroid, iron, vitamin D and B12, blood sugar, and hormones when relevant. Anxiety, fatigue, brain fog and low mood often have a physical contributor that deserves to be found before it's medicated as a psychiatric problem.

Nutrition and supplements

How your diet affects mood and anxiety, and evidence-based supplement recommendations that work well with your medications, tailored to you rather than copied from the internet.

Sleep and lifestyle

Practical strategies for sleep, movement, stress and daily rhythm. Small changes here often make medication work better, or reduce how much you need.

GeneSight genetic testing

A simple cheek swab that shows how your genes may affect the way you process psychiatric medications. Especially helpful if you've tried several without relief or with difficult side effects.

Collaborative care

We coordinate with your OB, midwife, therapist or primary care provider so your plan is one plan, not three conflicting ones.

Who integrative psychiatry is for

Everyone we see benefits from whole-picture care, but it matters most if you:

  • Have been handed medication after medication without anyone checking for a medical cause.
  • Are pregnant, postpartum or planning a pregnancy and want to lean on non-medication strategies where you can, while still having medication available when it's needed.
  • Suspect your symptoms track your cycle, your thyroid, your sleep or your season of life.
  • Want to understand why you feel the way you do, not just what pill to take.
  • Prefer a provider who takes supplements and lifestyle seriously, and who will also tell you honestly when they aren't enough.

What integrative care is not

It isn't anti-medication, and it isn't a replacement for medical care. When medication is the right tool, we use it, carefully. When a symptom turns out to be a thyroid problem or an iron deficiency, we treat it or send you to the right specialist. Integrative simply means we refuse to look at one piece of you and call it the whole picture.

How it fits into your visits

Integrative care isn't a separate appointment. It's woven into your evaluation and every follow-up. We may order labs at your first visit, review results together, add supplement or nutrition changes to your plan, and recommend GeneSight testing if medication choices have been difficult. Your visits are billed the same way as any psychiatric visit; lab and testing costs run through your insurance or the lab directly.

All FAQs
What is integrative psychiatry?

It means we're not only looking at your symptoms or deciding which medication to prescribe. We look at the whole picture: mental health, physical health, hormones, sleep, nutrition, stress, lifestyle and life experiences, and build a more individualized plan that may include medication, non-medication approaches, or both.

Does integrative mean no medication?

No. Medication is one tool among several. Many patients use medication and integrative strategies together. The goal is the right combination for you, not avoiding medication for its own sake.

What is GeneSight testing?

GeneSight is a pharmacogenetic test, done with a simple cheek swab, that shows how your genes may affect the way you process certain psychiatric medications. It can help narrow choices when earlier medications haven't worked or caused side effects. We'll talk through cost and coverage before ordering it.

Which labs do you order?

It depends on your symptoms and history. Common examples include thyroid function, iron and ferritin, vitamin D and B12, blood sugar, and sometimes hormone levels. We only order what's relevant to you, and we review the results with you.
